The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO) says it has entered into a partnership with the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) to plant seed paddy at Wales Estate as part of the GRDB’s efforts to develop new rice varieties for local farmers.
Wild rice is not true rice but an aquatic grass that grows best in gently flowing water with mucky bottoms. It’s harvested in the fall.
Global wheat production increases are being led by India, the US and Russia.
A team of researchers has traced a type of rice grown in the South American country of Suriname to a similar type found in the fields of Ivory Coast.
Wild rice may be scarce this year, as poor weather has drastically reduced the harvest.
The cultivation has expanded 600 hectares this year.
To improve the rice production in West Africa is necessary to develop action plans; in this case, the consultants has to know which are the specific needs of different types of farmers and the projects has to be attached to value chains.
