Members of the association noted that relying only on the weather for production is not enough as it is not reliable and often result in low yield.
The new rice variety, a cross between low-yield African rice and high-yield Asian rice varieties, matures quickly, is more pest- resistant than many varieties, does not require intensive irrigation or fertilizers, and is high in protein.
With water becoming an important cost, and with climate change and soil degradation, the System of Rice Intensification offers disadvantaged farming households better opportunities.
