EN2Rice is the staple food in the diet of Latin American and a key source of income for thousands of farmers in this continent. Since 1976 the rice sector gathers at the International Rice Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean to review scientific and technological advances, and to identify new challenges and opportunities; also it is a proper occasion to share knowledge and experiences around rice.

In this occasion the XII International Rice Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean will be held in Porto Alegre, the capital of rice in Brazil, from February 23 to 26, 2015.

This meeting is organized by the Instituto Rio Grandense do Arroz – IRGA (Brazil), the Latin American Fund for Irrigated Rice – FLAR (its acronym in Spanish), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture – CIAT (its acronym in Spanish), and the Global Rice Science Partnership – GRiSP.

We invite the rice sector from the region to join us, along with world-class experts, on the theme “Horizons for Competitiveness”. We will be discussing the state of the art and the contribution of key areas such as plant breeding, crop management, climate change, market opportunities and partnerships to make competitive the rice sector in Latin America.

The conference will also be a great opportunity to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of FLAR, a public-private partnership that has served as an engine for research, development, and alliances of the region around the rice.

The activities of the Conference will conclude on February 26 with a field day to be held at the IRGA’s Rice Experiment Station in Cachoeirinha, just 15 minutes away from Porto Alegre.
